Cruise Ship Fire 2014 - A blaze broke from the St. Lucia docked Oceania Insignia's engine room Friday, killing 3 workers on board, The Guardian has learned.
The terrible incident reportedly took place while the cruise liner was docked at St Lucia, an eastern Caribbean Island.
The Cruise Ship Fire 2014 story began when a fire broke from the engine room of the vessel for yet to be disclosed reasons.
One crew member and two contractors passed away because of the incident, but it wasn't made clear whether they got consumed by the blaze or if they died because of health-related reasons.
"We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred this morning on Insignia," Oceania Cruises spokesman Jason Lasecki said of the Cruise Ship Fire 2014 incident.
Lasecki noted that the ship was carrying 656 passengers at the time of the fire and that they were evacuated to safety by the crew members.
"Happened about 9:30 am. Lost power. We left the ship for a while, then went back on. Shortly afterward they decided to get all the passengers off the ship - actually did the muster," one passenger described the scene, according to Business Insider.
Insignia is being run by European officers and it reportedly has 400 crew members.
Lasecki then added that all passengers would be refunded by the company since the remainder of the cruise was unfortunately cancelled.
In addition, the company has also arranged charter flights to take care of the passengers transport to Miami.
Accommodation will also be shouldered by Oceania until the passengers could safely return to their cities.
As per Cruise Ship Fire 2014 reports, Oceania Insignia - a vessel built way back in 1998 but was refurbished in 2013 - had just departed on Sunday from San Juan, Puerto Rico for a 10-day cruise that was scheduled to end in Miami on Dec. 17.
Marshall Islands authorities are currently holding an investigation on the Cruise Ship Fire 2014 incident, and the US National Transportation Safety Board already confirmed that it will be sending officials to look into the details of what may have caused the fire.
St. Lucia police refused to comment on the story as of late, reports Fox News.
Because of the Cruise Ship Fire 2014 incident, three people were hospitalized ; one of them for mild respiratory distress after inhaling too much smoke.
