Horror and suspense weren't the main focus of the "Supernatural" mid-season finale. Instead, the show became a family drama as characters find their way in making their families whole again.
Castiel has been reflecting about fatherhood and Crowley has given his mother a chance to be his family again in the winter finale episode of "Supernatural," Buddy TV reported.
The episode started with Dean's nightmare, where he was covered in blood and dirt with murderous aura. In the dream, he was kneeling with a knife on his hand and surrounded with dead humans whom he apparently killed.
On the other hand, Castiel has begun his mission in making things right with his human vessel, Jimmy Novak. He started with Jimmy's daughter Claire, who has been sent to a group home after her mother left her.
To get Claire out of the group, he approached the supervisor and tried to persuade her. It wasn't successful though, so he went on to plan B where he busted Claire out. They shared a meal and just when Castiel thought he has finally won Claire over, Claire stole his wallet and ran away.
Castiel went to Dean to ask for help. While tracking down Claire, Castiel mentioned the Mark of Cain. Dean made Castiel promise to take him out if he ever went down that road again.
Meanwhile, Claire went back to her "family" who has tasked her to rob a convenience store. Fortunately, Castiel and Dean were just on time to stop her before initiating the theft. Claire, filled with anger and sadness, finally broke down and told Castiel her feelings. Claire walked away from the guilt-ridden Castiel.
Then, Sam and Dean confronted Castiel about fatherhood. Castiel told them that he never met his father. The brothers reminisced their dad John, whom they loved so much. After their heart-to-heart talk, Dean told Castiel to be wary since Claire can be in trouble.
Indeed, Claire was in a tight situation after her "father" sold her to pay off his debt. Castiel got her out on time but they're on to something worse. When Sam left Dean behind, the lead pervert broke a bottle on Dean's head and knocked him out.
Meanwhile, Crowley's reunion with his mother Rowena revealed some of their history. The reason Crowley never knew his father was because he was conceived when his mother joined a wild gathering of promiscuity during a winter solstice. Rowena lied to her son about how Gerald, Crowley's second-in-command, helped the souls to escape from Hell. Crowley fell for her trap and teamed up with her after he killed Gerald.
The episode ended the way it has started, except it wasn't a dream anymore. Dark Dean has been let out.
"Supernatural" will return on Jan. 20 the following year at 9 p.m. on CWS.
