Lake District's Keswick Mountain Festival

Holidaymakers with a taste for outdoor pursuits should find plenty to enjoy at the Keswick Mountain Festival, which returns to the Lake District next month.

Due to run from Wednesday May 16th to Sunday May 20th, the event offers a busy five days of activities, guest speakers, sporting events and special challenges.

From the adventure hub of the festival, located on the shores of Derwentwater, people will be able to enjoy a selection of films, talks and workshops to get them in the mood for some of the programme's more high-profile offerings.

Speakers set to appear in Keswick this year include Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton, veteran mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington and wilderness hiker Cameron McNeish.

Talks are due to take place at the festival's Keswick Mountain Theatre, which will be hosted at The Rawnsley Centre in the town centre.

For those who prefer to get active, the 2012 programme of events includes a triathlon, a cycling sportive and the Derwent Island Swim, a challenge that requires participants to complete a 1,500-metre swim through open water in one of the region's most picturesque lakes.

There is also the Latrigg Fell Race, which will take place on May 16th and is now in its 38th year.

LateRooms.com offers a wide range of Lake District hotels that could appeal to festival-goers, including Storrs Gate House.
