Samsung has finally enabled man to view the different worlds that are only visible in human's imagination.
Samsung has released its first virtual-reality headgear called Gear VR Innovator Edition on the market Monday, IGN reported.
Samsung is leading the way in launching virtual reality products with Gear VR. The headset has been designed for innovative consumers, such as virtual reality enthusiasts, developers, mobile experts and professionals and early technology adopters. Thus, the company has dubbed the latest equipment "Innovator Edition."
By releasing their first virtual-reality device, Samsung is attempting to increase the interest of people in virtual reality, a blossoming field pioneered by the company's partner, Oculus. Oculus has also developed their own virtual reality head mounted display called Rift, but has only released a development kit for developers.
Gear VR came with 17 applications developed by Samsung while working on the product. Some of the applications were from Oculus. The company has also developed a few other games for the launch.
The headset requires a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 smartphone as the display and brains of the gear. The Gear VR is attached to a Galaxy Note 4. It then provides a light, mobile virtual reality display. It uses the tracking sensor, which has been developed for the first Oculus development kit.
Samsung's vice president of immersive products and virtual reality Nick DiCarlo has stated that the launching of the product wasn't about sales, but rather about catching the people's attention to virtual reality, according to CNET.
"Our metric for success is for people to like our product, engage with it and build up daily habits," DiCarlo said. "It's not selling lots and lots of units."
The number of users is expected be limited at the start. DiCarlo declined to comment on the number of Gear VR units their company expects to sell and only stated that he is "not in a rush."
"We're in this for the long haul and it's about getting a lot of lessons learned fast so we can make something that can scale in the future," DiCarlo added.
Gear VR Innovator Edition can be purchased through AT&T's and Samsung's websites for $200. The product, however, is only available in the United States as of the moment.
