Devils Descend On El Salvador

In El Salvador it's a battle between good and evil. During Holy Week, a talciguine, or demon man, is paired up with someone dressed as Jesus, and together they attend mass.

Priest Javier Martinez says the tradition is a symbol of triumph over sin. Martinez says, "Our Talciguines get close to Jesus, which represents the biblical scene in which the devil attempts to tempt Jesus. But Jesus, with the power of God, defeats the devil."

Outside, nine talciguines lash locals to punish them for their sins. But then the Jesus character appears to show that good has prevailed, ringing a bell to symbolize forgiveness.

The annual ceremony takes place before Easter, when Catholics and other Christians celebrate Jesus rising from the dead after dying for their sins.
