The bus driver, who is also a math teacher, hails from Davenport. People are reportedly calling her a hero Wednesday after she saved the lives of the 38 children by getting them off of the bus before it burned into flames.
The name of the bus driver who saves children is Behrman, 31. Her quick thinking and reflexes has allowed to save the children's lives by ushering them out to safety before anyone else could be injured or worse, NBC affiliate WESH reported.
Bus driver saves children from the Polk County middle school, and they were headed for the Discovery Academy shortly after 7:00 a.m. Behrman said that before the incident, she saw smoke coming from the back of the bus. Fortunately, she was able to pull the vehicle over in time. He called 91 later on.
According to Behrman, within minutes, the smoke in the bus quickly turned to flames.
"I evacuated the kids off the bus and that's when flames started coming out of the back," she said.
A passersby on the scene was able to capture the moment leading up to the bus driver saving children via cell phone. The video also shows the flames shooting into the sky whilst barrels of smoke also filled the air.
After bus driver saves children, "There were still three kids on the bus when flames started coming," said Behrman
"That bus driver was did exactly what she was trained to do. She saw a hazard, immediately pulled over, and took care of the situation. She was instrumental in saving all those children," according to Sgt. Mary Godino of the Florida Highway Patrol.
On Wednesday morning, Behrman said she was shocked to find an empty space after the the school bus which she's been driving for five years got burned.
"I was completely speechless, flabbergasted. I did cry," she says.
The bus driver saves children and she is now being called a hero. With that she has this response:
"I didn't do anything any other, I hope, bus driver or teacher would do. We go to work every day and we're there to educate and protect. That's what we do that's what we live for."
The plumes of smoke reportedly caused traffic back-ups for hours. The incident also caused I-4 in both directions to be shut down, reports WTSP.
"This could have been pretty bad. We could have had a tragic situation, but the bus driver was instrumental in pulling over," said FHP Sgt. Mary Godino. "Once she started to smell gas and smoke, with that combination, she did a fabulous job."
Traffic cameras from FDOT and FHP are reportedly what alerted officials to the blaze. They immediately sent help to be able to monitor which lanes needed to be shut down after the bus driver saves children.
By 11 a.m., all lanes on I-4 near Mile Marker 51 in Davenport were reopened.
A second bus came by and took the children to school, while the burnt-out bus was hauled away by a tow truck.
The cause of the accident where the bus driver saves children is still under investigated, according to NBC News. Buhrman told WESH that the children exited calmly just as they had been taught during drills. Meanwhile, school officials at Discovery Academy of Lake Alfred told WESH said that its buses are inspected every 30 days. Behrman said she still plans to be back on her route first thing the next day.
