Claudia Emerson Cancer - One of the most amazing American poets has succumbed to death on Thursday. Claudia Emerson, the critically acclaimed writer of collection "Late Wife" has died of cancer at the age of 57.
Claudia Emerson's cancer is reportedly the cause of the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet's death early Thursday morning.
Aside from being a remarkable poet, Emerson was also a Virginia Commonwealth University professor. She passed away after a long battle with cancer, according to ABC News.
A native of Chatham, Virginia, professor Emerson's most notable work is her collection of her handwritten letters following a failed marriage of 19 years titled "Late Wife."
The collection also featured her blossoming romance with her second husband, Kent Ippolito, reports Star Tribune.
Speaking after winning the prestigious award, Emerson noted that the inspiration of her collection was the "complex emotions" between a couple struggling to rekindle the love they once shared.
"The book says a lot about my life," she said. "Sometimes the subjects just present themselves, I process the world through poetry."
The poet, who taped all the letters to the walls of her office and home, admitted at the time that everything was not written by a vengeful ex-wife.
"I don't think they'd be very good if they had been sharply written," she said. "I think it is sad when a marriage dissolves, even if it wasn't the happiest one."
Amid the news that Claudia Emerson has died of cancer, the chairwoman of VCU's Department of English, Katherine Bassard, said, "Claudia Emerson was more than the sum of her many prestigious awards, including the Pulitzer Prize.
"She was simply the most alive, gracious, and courageous human being I have ever met. Incredibly funny and down to earth, she lived and loved life to the fullest. And she loved every minute of being at VCU. Her dedication to her students and her craft were unquestioned and she will be desperately missed by her family, friends, colleagues and students," she added, according to Times Dispatch.
Claudia is not only a Pulitzer-winning poet, she has also served as Virginia's poet laureate for two years and bagged a 2011 Guggenheim Fellowship.
Claudia Emerson's cancer type was not immediately disclosed.
