Teri Hatcher 2014 recently spoke at a United Nations event commemorating the International Day dedicated for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on Tuesday and she painfully recounted her unfortunate experience of being molested by her uncle. She first opened up about how her uncle sexually abused her when she was only seven years old back in 2006.
The star of "Desperate Housewives" mentioned that she was far too young that she had absolutely no idea what was happening to her. "I was convinced it was my fault and I blamed myself for what had happened. So, I didn't tell anyone and I was silent," recalled the 49-year-old actress.
She added, "I did, however, unsurprisingly, start to act out and my mother decided to keep me away from my uncle. I didn't see him anymore, but no one in my family ever asked exactly what happened. We remained silent."
Thankfully, she decided to not to keep mum about her unfortunate experience forever. She first came forward about her sad experience to Vanity Fair in 2006. She opened up about the sexual abuse that she had to endure with Richard Hayes Stone. The abuse only stopped when she reached eight years old.
She eventually learned that there were also other victims, one of whom committed suicide later on. When she found out about the death of her fellow sexual abuse victim, she decided that it was high time she approached a district attorney.
Fortunately, Hayes was sentenced to 14 years in prison. Teri Hatcher 2014 said, "I have so much pain. I'm a woman who carries around all these layers of fear and vulnerability. I'm trying to be my powerful me. It's in there, but I have to find the strong part underneath the layers of 'I'm sh*t. I'm never going to go anywhere!'"
