Hundreds of plants full of succulent nectar are arriving in the Hidden Jungle aviary at the San Diego Zoo. And at the same time, hundreds of pupa are growing to become beautiful butterflies in the hatching room.
Bird curator Michael Mace says it's all in preparation for the zoo's Butterfly Jungle. The bird curator at San Diego Zoo Safari Park, says, "We have been importing thousands and thousands of butterflies, we hatch here. Those butterflies are then released to the exhibit. The butterflies are released a hundred at a time, building up the numbers so that when the curtain opens up, people will be in with thousands of butterflies."
Hundreds of the 30 species are emerging everyday, while horticulturists carefully select plants in peak bloom that will thrive in the exhibit. Park guests can experience the fragile creatures flittering around them at the Butterfly Jungle exhibit, open between March 24 and April 15.
