Mickey Rourke boxing match is rumored to have been rigged. A top boxing expert from Russia dismissed the victory of "The Wrestler" actor in the ring against a much younger Elliot Seymour as a public relations sham.
According to Alexander Belenky, who used to be an amateur boxer and a veteran commentator, mentioned that the recent Mickey Rourke boxing match was "just good PR action." Others strongly suggested that the match was purposely staged to give the 62-year-old star an opportunity to make money.
Rourke, who is quite famous for his performance in "The Wrestler," managed to beat his 29-year-old ring rival. Surprisingly, he managed to defeat Seymour in just two rounds despite being absent from the ring for 20 years.
Belenky then stated, "Mickey Rourke boxing - I'm too old for going to the circus. This 'performance' is just good PR action." Apart from attacking Rourke's actual boxing skills, he also talked about Seymour's lack thereof, describing the younger boxer as a "born loser" for having "won only once in the last 10 years."
Although Belenky might have been a tad bit harsh with his words, his accusations were actually only echoes among other industry insiders. Andrey Bazdrev, a former press secretary to the Russian Professional Boxing Federation, also shrugged off the Mickey Rourke boxing match as "open clownery."
"The promoters won't speak about it openly because if they do, they would not have sold the tickets," added Bazdrev.
Commentator Dmitry Klipin also said, "His participation was, first of all, a performance, 'The Wrestler' movie in real life. And, don't forget about the financial background of his comeback. It is hard for me to say anything about the strength of 29-year-old Seymour, but I think this opponent was especially chosen for Rourke, considering his age and physical abilities."
Klipin also took a small jab at Rourke's senior status and said, "Meat mincing is not good for a man on pension."
