Thawing Frozen Turkey 101: Knowing When To Thaw The Thanksgiving Staple

Thawing frozen turkey is not as easy as it looks. Knowing the right time when to thaw the famous Thanksgiving staple is actually critical.

It is never too early to plan the Thanksgiving menu, especially if a Thanksgiving dinner party is underway. Moreover, hosting such an event will never be complete without a turkey on the table.

Knowing how to cook the turkey correctly is not the only thing that must be studied. Those who aspire to be perfect, or, at least, near-to-perfect turkey cooks, should also know how to correctly prepare it. The last thing that anyone would want to happen would be to roast a half-frozen turkey.

First of all, the turkey needs to be placed inside the refrigerator one day for every four pounds. This means that an average 12-pound turkey will take nearly three days for a perfect thawing frozen turkey before it is ready to cook.

For those who intend to brine their Thanksgiving birds, a certain number of days must be added to the mix, depending on how many days has been planned to let the bird soak to the aforementioned calculation. Of course, thawing frozen turkey must be completed before it is ready for brining.

Plus, to help ensure that the refrigerator is able to retain its pristine interior, expert cooks strongly suggest that the thawing frozen turkey process must be done in a disposable baking dish or in another similar type of container. Since some of the bird's juice might flow out of the bag, using such dish will prevent the liquid from seeping onto the fridge racks.

It is always important to do some simple math when it comes to cooking. Even experts need to mark their calendars in order to make sure that they do not run into some last-minute cooking problems with their Thanksgiving dinner preparations.
