London Hyatt gas explosion - Shortly after midnight, the five-star Hyatt Regency Churchill in London had suffered an explosion at its basement. 14 people were reported to have been injured in the explosion. What could have led to the incident?
Apart from the 14 people confirmed to have been injured following the London Hyatt gas explosion, 400 guests of the five-star hotel were also evacuated. Out of the 14 individuals, five of them were taken to the hospital. According to officials currently investigating the explosion, it is a suspected case of a gas leak.
Following the London Hyatt gas explosion, the company released a statement. They however failed to address the reports if the explosion was indeed caused by a gas leak, of which could potentially prove a flaw in their building management.
"Hyatt's top priority is the safety and well-being of our guests and associates, and we are currently working to provide guests with accommodations while we evaluate whether the hotel suffered any significant damage," says the company in a statement, released by CBC.
Contrary to early reports about the London Hyatt gas explosion injuring 14 people, the hotel statement claims only 12 Hyatt employees were injured. Extensive damage in the basement and in the ground floor of the hotel has been reported after the London Hyatt gas explosion. Apart from the damages to the Hyatt hotel, five cars parked in the area were damaged as well.
The night of the London Hyatt gas explosion, 35 fire fighters from six engines responded to the scene. Reports by the Standard UK also state that police officers rushed to the scene. They reportedly received a call at 11:40 in the evening concerning a "suspected gas explosion at Portman Square."
