Liquids can be one of the trickiest parts of packing for a flight, especially if you are bringing a carryon. Either they are over the limit, or they leak in your bag. Whatever the reason they seem to be a nuisance.
The dreaded liquid explosion under high pressure is a nightmare. You never know which liquid will decide it wants to go free. While supposedly all your liquids are in a quart sized Ziploc bag, that doesn't mean the liquid cannot seep through the seal. Plus, all the other bottles in the bag will be covered as well.
The first thing that helps with the unwanted explosions is filling the bottles to the top. This will cut down on air space in the bottle. Another tip you could try is placing a piece of Saran wrap over the opening before screwing on the lid, preventing liquids from seeping out. What I like to do is put any liquids prone to explosion like mouthwash, hairspray, etc in its own Ziploc bag before putting it in the required quart sized plastic bag.
Sometimes the three-ounce limit just does not cover the amount of liquid you need to bring. Of course medicate liquids of larger quantities are allowed, but I'm talking more about trying to pack enough shampoo. You could always pack another three-ounce bottle, but you are limited to one quart sized bag so space is limited. You can always buy more of whatever you need at your destination if you run out. Many hotels offer items like shampoo, conditioner, body wash, or mouthwash in your bathroom, so if you run out you can use the free ones! And who does not like free stuff??
Remember if you are checking a bag, it is easier to put your liquids in that suitcase. This way you can pack as much as you like. Plus, you do not have to fuss with pulling out your bag of liquids at the security checkpoint. Even though it is not required to put checked liquids in a plastic bag, I would still advise putting leaking-prone liquids in their own Ziploc bags for leakage prevention.
