The FSU shooting today happened as a gunman opened fire at the Florida university library. Three people were left hospitalized before the campus police killed the gunman early Thursday during the FSU shooting today.
FS View, the school newspaper, reported that the gunman opened fire around 12:30 a.m., firing four shots at Strozier Library. Two people from the three people injured during the FSU shooting today were reportedly admitted to the Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare hospital.
No further details were given by police spokesman David Northway about the three people who have been wounded from the FSU shooting today, reports Reuters. Early reports say their condition remains uncertain.
According to a nursing supervisor at the hospital, medics were treating the two victims of the FSU shooting today for gunshot wounds.
Vice president of student affairs, Mary Coburn, also announced that the gunman from the FSU shooting today was shot and killed by FSU police. The Tallahassee Police Department also confirmed that the gunman first fired on FSU officers, who killed him.
"*FSU ALERT!* Dangerous Situation! Main Campus - Tallahassee," a message by FSU's emergency alert system read alerting students of the FSU shooting today. "Seek shelter immediately, away from doors and windows."
Officers reportedly confronted attacker from the FSU shooting today outside Florida State University's Strozier Library. They ordered the gunman to drop his weapon. However, he opened fire on them, leaving police no choice but to shoot him, according to the Tallahassee police said.
The Washington Post reports that students inside the library walked out from the area with their hands up as police swarmed the scene of the FSU shooting today. Parts of the campus remain on lock down. By early Wednesday morning, there was still no explanation for the FSU shooting today.
"It was the most cops I've ever seen in my life," Matthew Paskert told CNN of the FSU shooting today. Paskert is a photo editor of the student newspaper.
"It seemed to take students and faculty at least that I've heard by complete surprise," he told The Washington Post. "No one expected this to ever happen here. You see it happen at other schools."
Alexandra Lauren, a graduate student, told CNN that she was in the library during the FSU shooting today.
"We heard the gunshots, and then it was in a matter of seconds the entire first floor just seemed to go into chaos," she said, before adding, "It was very scary. I'm just more heartbroken than anything else. FSU means a lot to me."
Freshman Allison Kope from Cocoa Beach, was reportedly about 25 feet from the front door of the library as the chaos from the FSU shooting today started. Kope first heard a strange noise and after about two minutes, people began mentioning about a shooter inside the campus.
"You hear people say 'a gun is in the building, a gun is in the building," she said. "No one really knew what to do. You never think anything like this is going to happen to you."
Kope said she immediately fled the library. She left her laptop and books.
"I ran for my life," she said. "I ran right out the back door."As she and others waited behind the building, she said she heard more than five shots be fired."
Finals are approaching, therefore "It's not unusual for 100 students to be there this time of year," Perry Kostidakis, editor of the student newspaper, told CNN.
Strozier is the university's largest library. It is open 24 hours most weekdays, the Tallahassee Democrat reports.
More than 20 emergency vehicles arrived on the scene of the FSU shooting today.
Tallahassee Police Department Chief Michael DeLeo, Deputy Chief Darrell E. Furuseth and Maj. Lonnie Scott were all present on the scene. Tallahassee Fire Department, Leon County EMS units, Tallahassee Assistant City Manager Dee Crumpler, Mayor-elect Andrew Gillum and FSU administration also responded to the FSU shooting today and went to the scene.
FSU vice president of student affairs, Mary Coburn, said the library was packed at the time of the shooting and FSU officials were already providing students inside the library at the time of the FSU shooting today with victim advocacy services.
"We're working with all the situations and providing all the services that are available," Coburn said during an early morning media briefing.
According to FSUPD Maj. Jim Russell, the TPD was called to investigate the incident. FSU administrators have also been notified already of the incident and they will reportedly be making statements at a later time.
Student body president Stefano Cavallaro went to the scene of the FSU shooting today and spoke with students at the incident.
Some students milled around campus, however, Landis Green has been blocked off.
Below is a video posted on Facebook by Jessica Davis. In the video, a voice over the intercom can be heard saying "There has been a shooting in the library. Stay where you are." The voice also instructed people to call 911 if they have been shot.
The FSU shooting today was also described by witnesses and other students via Twitter.
