The Cleveland Cavaliers have expressed their interest in trading for veteran small forward Corey Brewer, leaving the possibility third-year shooting guard Dion Waiters could be dealt to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Sources close to situation reported on Sunday.
According to ESPN NBA insider Marc Stein, the Wolves are shopping the 28-year old Brewer in an effort to clear a log-jam at the small forward and shooting guard positions.
Head coach Flip Saunders has already cut down Brewer's playing time to give way for the development of Anthony Bennett and Andrew Wiggins, who were traded by the Cavs to the Timberwolves for Kevin Love in last summer's blockbuster trade.
Brewer, who is averaging 9.8 points and 3.1 assists per game this season, could provide the Cavs with a versatile player that could play either shooting guard or LeBron James' reliever at small forward. Moreover, Brewer had a nice chemistry with Love during their time with the Wolves.
Although the Cavs can use a trade exception to acquire Brewer's $4.7 million contract without surrendering any of the player, there's some speculation that Waiters could be moved to the Wolves.
Waiters began the season as a starter at shooting guard for the Cavaliers, but head coach David Blatt decided to put him back in his sixth man role instead to give the bench more firepower. Joe Harris, a rookie out of Virginia, is expected to assume the starting role soon because of his ability as a spot-up shooter.
Averaging 9.4 points on 37 percent shooting, Waiters badly wanted to crack into the Cavaliers starting five ever since he was drafted fourth overall in the 2012 Draft. He got that chance after a solid showing in the preseason, but soon found out that it's hard to get enough touches when sharing the floor with Love, James and Kyrie Irving.
The Wolves, on the other hand, are already loaded with two-guard players but having a chance to acquire a talented scorer like Waiters might be too hard for them to snub.
