Journalist Jesse Nash and and his companions were on a game drive when they spotted the young elephant being surrounded and attacked by lions, according to the New York Post.
At one point, it would seem that the situation was so dire that the baby elephant would not survive the lion attack. Two big cats were able to latch on the youngster's back, while another grabbed onto one of its back legs.
Grind TV describes the footage of the baby elephant surviving the lion attack as something that viewers might find difficult to watch, especially since the ions intend to kill the elephant with their sharp claws.
"Where are the other elephants, for God's sake?" a voice shouted over the video.
However, the lions were unable to take the elephant down, even as they desperately tried to cling to his back. The baby elephant survives lion attack and he was able to get away from the hungry lions, reported the New York Post.
Though the entire ordeal was caught on video by a group on a game drive through the safari, Norman Carr Safaris currently has more striking photographs of the great escape on its website, reports Newser.
The baby elephant survives lion attack by escaping into a nearby body of water. Perhaps he encountered another close call when he exited the water and the 14 lions started attacking anew, but eventually the elephant was reunited with his herd.
"In the 30-plus years I have been a safari guide in Zambia at the [Luangwa] Park, never have I seen anything like this," described the guide who drove the group to the site of attack. "We were all so worried the baby elephant would be killed right before us."
The baby elephant survives lion attack and because of his bravery and will to live, he has been named "Hercules," according to the Huffington Post.
