Griffith Park attack happened on Monday, but it looks like the Los Angeles police have now made an arrest with connection to the crime. The violent attack left the victim in critical condition.
The suspect, whom the police did not immediately identify, was arrested by LAPD's Hollywood division around 7:30 p.m. on Monday, according to Sgt. Wayne Guillary. The officers who made the arrest saw the person who matched the suspect's description.
Earlier in the day, the victim was found by hikers around 2:30 p.m. He is still in critical condition in the intensive care unit of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He had to be airlifted out of the area, which was near the 2200 block of Fern Dell Drive.
The hikers who found him called 911 and told KTLA that the face of the victim was very bloody. Jared Cooper of the Los Angeles Fire Department told the local TV station that the victim was in his 30s and had severe blows to his head and multiple injuries on his face.
Jane Kim, an LAPD Officer, stated that the Griffith Park attack is being investigated as an assault with a deadly weapon. However, she declined to give further details about what kind of weapon the case's investigators believed was used during the attack.
Sgt. Douglas Bowler of the LAPD told NBC Los Angeles, "Anytime someone's assaulted around the head, it creates very serious injuries like he has. A foot could be a deadly weapon if you kick somebody."
Guillary informed KTLA that the investigators believe that the attack may have been the result of an argument that escalated into a brutal physical altercation.
The area where the Griffith Park attack happened is actually a very popular hiking destination. Just this past May, two women reported that they were attacked in separate incidents. One of them was hospitalized because of the attempted robbery which escalated into a physical altercation. The other woman was able to defend herself against a sexual offender and was not injured.
