If you are taking a holiday in the UK you might be interested in 5 quick and easy tips that could help you save hassle and money on your trip. After all why pay for a second rate service!
As a seasoned traveller both in this country and overseas I have experienced the long queues and often the poor quality but very expensive food. So I would like to share my experiences and recommendations with you.
1. Buy your fuel before you get onto the motorway.
2. No doubt many of us have experienced the massive tailback on the motorways at holiday times, particularly at the start of the school holidays or the 'Saturday changeover', when holiday makers vacate their holiday homes and the new tenants are travelling to start their holiday. I used to start my journey both going and coming back at about 5 or 6am in the morning , it used to take the edge of the journey and beat a large percentage of the heavy traffic that builds up later.
3. I used to avoid most of the motorway services as they were either crowded or long queues for the food in the summer time but they are open 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Just off the motorways with easy driving distance are local supermarkets like Asda, Sainsbury's, Tesco's, Morrison's etc. Here you can have a good quality meal at a reasonable cost and also pick up any household goods, such as loo roll, you may have forgotten. Just off Junction 25 of the M5, for example is a large Sainsbury's Supermarket where the breakfast is freshly cooked, reasonably priced and with other shops close at hand it makes an ideal break from motorway driving.
4. Don't always rely on your Sat nav as you can lose reception and the last thing you want when you get good reception is for the Sat nav to say 'I wouldn't have gone this way'. Either print your journey from Google maps prior to leaving or take a comprehensive UK map with you as a backup.
5. Remember to take plenty of water and some food just in case you do get stuck in a traffic jam. If you have children then you might want to take (or veto?) some of their favourite music - which you can all sing along to. Or alternatively remember to take some cotton wool
