Ebola- Negative Yale Researcher Ryan Boyko Placed In Mandatory Isolation; Yale Student Criticizes Health Policy [VIDEO+REPORT]

A Yale graduate student serves a mandatory quarantine despite being tested negative for Ebola.

Ryan Boyko, a researcher who spent three weeks of volunteer service in Liberia has been under observation since he returned to Connecticut in October 11. Although he reportedly said that he did not make any contact with patients infected with the deadly virus that already killed thousands of people, he was still place in an ordered quarantine. The researcher reportedly worked with Liberia's Ministry of Health in terms of developing a contact tracing system which can help in preventing the spread of the viral infection.

The mandatory quarantine from Dr. Jewel Mullen, Connecticut's commissioner of Department of Public Health take effect after the Yale researcher experienced fever few days after his arrival. He was then transported to New Haven Hospital for testing if he possibly carries the Ebola virus. Although he tested negative for the virus, he was ordered to keep himself isolated in his apartment guarded by police, making him question the current health policy.

According to an interview with Wall Street Journal, Boyko said that he also tested negative for the virus while having a fever in Liberia. The 30 year-old researcher also revealed that he already had three tests which all have negative results. He also reportedly told FOX CT that he has no risk factors in having Ebola and that he has been compliant to symptom monitoring as well as self-isolation.

While being obliged to undergo the mandatory isolation issued by Connecticut's health commissioner, the Yale researcher also made his remarks when it comes to the policy that the state has. According to him, the policy is already making health workers think twice about going to West Africa and give aid.

Aside from the Yale graduate student, The New England Journal of Medicine also reportedly claims that the approach towards the outbreak is not scientifically based making it hard to combat the ongoing Ebola outbreak.
