Submarine shark - The largest sharks in existence are reported to be the size of a combat submarine or that of a German battleship. These submarine sharks are called Megalodon that were basically the bad boys of the ocean. So, is there still a submarine shark left in the world?
Divers can rest easy because the submarine shark no longer exist. According to scientists, the Megalodon's are already extinct. These sharks that are over 60 feet long and 110 tonnes in weight have died out for almost 2.6 million years ago. Though scientists have not exactly pinpointed the exact date of the Megalodon's extinction, rest assured the submarine shark has long been gone from ocean waters.
"Though the technique does not give us the exact date when a species went extinct, it gives the date by which it can be assumed that a species has gone extinct," stated Chris Clements, a research assistant at the University of Zurich in a report by the Register.
Given the name submarine shark, the Megalodon was the same size of submarines used in the World War II by the Royal Navy. These sharks are also reported to have the strongest and most powerful bite than any animal recorded in the history of Earth.
Due to the extinction of the submarine shark, the Great White sharks and a number of other huge whales have become the largest to exist. If not for the Megalodon's extinction, the largest whales today would have not survived.
"When we calculated the time of Megalodon's extinction, we noticed that the modern function and gigantic sizes of filter feeder whales became established around that time. Future research will investigate if Megalodon's extinction played a part in the evolution of these new classes of whales," added Catalina Pimiento, University of Florida.
Luckily, the submarine shark is extinct and the only appearance it has made is on Hollywood films especially on one that has jumped out from the ocean and swallowed a plane whole.
