Oscar Taveras, a scouting report or someone who is still on the prospect list of professional baseball, has unfortunately passed away, along with his girlfriend after a tragic car crash while they were in Dominican Republic, reports SBNation.
While everyone was all eyes on baseball's biggest stage last night, the unfortunate news about scouting report Oscar Taveras' death surfaced, with only little info on what really happened.
The sudden death of 22-year-old aspiring professional baseball player came as a shock to St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny.
His full potential as a player was yet to be showcased when he was robbed off of his life. He only had 80 games in the majors under his belt prior to the car accident, which also took the life of his girlfriend, Edilia Arvelo, 18.
Following the incident, a private burial service on Tuesday was quickly prepared by their loved ones, with Matheny, general manager John Mozeliak and pitcher Carlos Martinez expected to be in attendance.
"I was asked last night to give some words regarding the tragic death of Oscar Taveras, but I just simply couldn't," Methany said on Monday. "To say this is a horrible loss of a life ended too soon would be an understatement."
According to several reports about Oscar Taveras, a scouting report or potential trade target, he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals at the young age of 16 for just $145,000.
Despite being young for his level, he managed to establish a name among his peers with his impressive scores and outstanding performance. He even won the MVP of the Double-A Southern League in 2011 after hitting .321/.380/.572 with 23 homers.
Taveras was promoted just this June to the majors when Matt Adams obtained an injury. He had also been compared to a young Vladimir Guerrero because of his ability to hit bad balls and his rather aggressive attitude in every game.
Because of this, Oscar Taveras was regarded as one of the top prospects with undeniable potential to go a long way in the sport, according to San Jose Mercury News.
"He was someone that became an identity of our organization to some degree," Mozeliak said Monday night. "When you think about how much has been written about him and how much has been talked about him, he never truly got a chance to show it at the major league level."
Local reports state that Taveras was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro with his girlfriend when they got into a car accident on a highway between the beaches of Sosua and Cabarete in Puerto Plata, which is 215 miles north of Santo Domingo.
The road was quite wet from recent rain and this may have led to the crash as per an initial investigation, said highway police spokesman Col. Diego Pesqueira.
The autopsy results of Taveras and Arvelo are still unavailable as of late.
"In my opinion, the word 'love' is the most misused, and misunderstood word in the English language. It is not popular for men to use this word, and even less popular for athletes," Matheny said. "But, there is not a more accurate word for how a group of men share a deep and genuine concern for each other. We loved Oscar, and he loved us. That is what a team does, that is what a family does. You will be missed, Oscar."
Oscar Taveras' passing came following his team's loss against San Francisco in the NL Championship Series.
