CIA torture reports - In an open letter to President Barack Obama, 12 winners of the Nobel Peace Prize have urged the US president to release the CIA torture reports. The laureates had asked for "full disclosure to the American people of the extent and use of torture and rendition by American soldiers, operatives, and contractors, as well as the authorization of torture and rendition by American officials."
Published on TheCommunity.com Sunday night, the letter from the 12 Nobel Peace Prize winners not only pushes for full disclosure on the CIA torture reports but the closure of Guantanamo Bay as well. This site had been openly used for torture by the CIA.
Why the need for disclosure on the CIA torture reports? After Obama had openly admitted to the use of torture back in August, it would not be the least surprising everyone would be dying to know all the grim details in the history of the United States on the use of torture.
While the CIA torture reports are yet to be released, reports claim that after the 2001 terrorist attacks on the US, people rounded up by the CIA were subject to severe methods of torture. These include sleep deprivation, shackling captives in excruciating "stressful" positions naked over a period of time and waterboarding or simulated drowning.
The open letter to disclose the CIA torture reports had been signed by 12 Nobel Peace Prize winners namely Carlos Belo of the year 1996, Oscar Arias of the year 1987, Mohamed ElBaradei of the year 2005, Leymah Gbowee of the year 2011, F W De Klerk of the year 1993, John Hume of the year 1998, Adolfo Perez Esquivel of the year 1980, Desmond Tutu of the year 1984, Jose Ramos-Horta of the year 1996, Jody Williams of the year 1997, Betty Williams of the year 1976 and Muhammad Yunus of the year 2006.
