The Sacramento shooting today suspect is now in custody of the authorities but his motive in igniting a series of shootings and carjackings is still unknown.
According to The Sacramento Bee, authorities are yet to uncover the real motive behind the Sacramento shooting today but the suspect who shot a rifle at a deputy at close range is now in custody.
In a shocking turn of events, two deputies were left dead, a motorist severely injured and another deputy wounded in a shooting spree that immediately prompted law enforcement officers to carry out a massive manhunt for 34-year-old Marcelo Marquez.
In a press conference about the Sacramento shooting, Sheriff Scott Jones revealed that the day of carnage began at 10:22 a.m. when 47-year-old Deputy Danny Oliver and his partner approached a car at a parking lot.
It isn't clear why Oliver and his partner approached the vehicle with a man and a woman inside, but when he was close enough, the man inside fired a rifle in Oliver's forehead, instantly killing him before he could even strike back at the suspect.
Oliver is a father of two daughters and a 15-year veteran of the department.
Jones revealed that Oliver's partner managed to fire back at the assailant but the latter managed to escape and even attempted to carjack another vehicle in the 700 block of Howe Avenue.
Apparently, the owner of the car refused to surrender the keys to Marquez, prompting him to shot the man in the head as well.
The motorist, who fell backward into the car, has been rushed to the hospital and his condition is still unstable as of writing.
Meanwhile, after failing to carjack the unnamed motorist's vehicle, Marquez and his partner took a white convertible Ford Mustang instead but abandoned it several blocks away in a residential area.
The pair then confronted a gardener and demanded for his pickup truck, which they used in escaping the area until they reached Fair Oaks Boulevard to Carmichael, where they were spotted changing clothes by a Sacramento County parks ranger.
Upon reporting the sighting of Marquez and his partner, a massive police back-up immediately rushed to the scene, forcing 19 San Juan Unified Schools and the Jesuit High School to completely lock down while they try to catch the suspect.
Unfortunately, the pair has already left the area and was heading to Interstate 80 to Auburn using the pickup.
Placer County sheriff's deputies reportedly saw the pickup and approached it right away, but they were shot by the suspect. One of the deputies, whose identity is yet to be revealed, was announced dead at 4:20 p.m. by Sutter Roseville Medical Center.
Sacramento shooting today reports said CHOP officers quickly stood roadside carrying their rifles as a SWAT team staged on Gum Street and at Pacific Street while armed Roseville police checked passing motorists before allowing them to pass through.
Authorities reportedly raced to different shootings scenes in hopes of catching the gunman before he was captured while hiding inside the 220 Belmont Drive home, reports CBS Local Sacramento.
The Sacramento shooting today comes just a few days before the eighth anniversary of the on-duty death of Sacramento Sheriff's deputy Jeffrey Mitchell.
