Takata airbag defect prompts the recall of several Toyota Motor Corp models in the United States on Monday.
About 247,000 cars, SUVs and pickup trucks are being recollected because of the possible danger that its passengers may face. According to the recent report, the automotive manufacturing company issued the recall after it was revealed that the front passenger airbags installed in different models are defective. The inflators are actually manufactured by Japan's Takata Corp which also provides the same kind of product in other manufacturers.
Other car manufacturing companies that issued the same action with Toyota includes the Honda Motor and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Chrysler Group. The named manufacturers start to remove its affected car products in the high-humidity areas of the United States while the investigation is ongoing regarding the possibility of a defect to occur especially when it is being exposed to the specific humidity. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is also investigating the ongoing defect problems after several reports of bag explosions occurred in Florida and Puerto Rico.
On Oct.10, Takata reportedly informed Toyota about its defective airbags which failed during its testing. Toyota then decided to remove its affected models for replacement and repair. The company manufacturing the car inflators has already affected about 16 million vehicles for over the last six years.
The life of a front passenger may be endangered if riding in a vehicle where the inflators are defective. According to U.S. safety regulators, the bags can malfunction and blow shrapnel into the chest and face of the passenger. Four deaths in Honda cars have been already linked to the faulty inflators.
Toyota models affected by the recall due to the defective Takata airbags are from year 2002-2005. Included in the list are Lexus SC and Toyota Corolla, Matrix, Sequoia and Tundra.
