Children PA House Fire - An unexpectedly fast-moving and horrifying house fire in western Pennsylvania killed a man's elderly father, his wife and her four children Saturday morning. Family members said the married couple tried to save their loved ones from the children PA house fire incident, but to no avail.
The blaze erupted shortly before 7 a.m., Saturday, according to the survivor's aunt, Donna Ackerman.
The victims of the children PA house fire tragedy, which happened in the Pittsburgh suburb of McKeesport, were Hope Jordan, four children aged 2 to 7, and the sole survivor's paralyzed father, family members said.
The surviving victim, 23-year-old Keith Egenlauf, suffered burns to over 55 percent of his body. He was rushed to UPMC Mercy hospital in Pittsburgh after the children PA house fire misfortune and remains in critical condition at the hospital's the burn unit, said a nursing supervisor.
Egenlauf and Jordan's Facebook page indicated that the couple were married Dec. 7. They escaped the flames of the children PA house fire the first time, but they went back into the burning two-story structure to save the children and Egenlauf's 56-year-old father, Ronald Edward Egenlauf, who was paralyzed from a stroke, according to Ackerman.
"He and Hope got out, and then went back in to get the kids," Ackerman said. Keith Egenlauf was burned but managed to escape a second time, said Egenlauf's aunt.
Relatives were able to identify the two adult victims of the children PA house fire incident as the elder Egenlauf and Jordan. They also identified the children as Jordan's son and three daughters - 7-year-old Dominic Jordan; 6-year-old Autumn Jordan; 3-year-old Serenity Jakub; and 2-year-old Victoria Jakub, reports the Associated Press.
Meanwhile, 60-year-old Mary Benton, another aunt who, like Ackerman, was a sister of Egenlauf's father, said Keith Egenlauf and his father were always close.
"He stayed beside his dad no matter what. His dad didn't do anything without him," said Benton.
The two had been living in the house for around 10 years now, Ackerman said.
Ackerman added that Ronald Egenlauf, the father, had been paralyzed from a stroke that occurred six years ago during surgery to repair an aneurysm. He has been using a wheelchair since.
Chief Alvin Henderson of Emergency Services in Allegheny County said Ronald was found in a first-floor room after the children PA house fire incident. He had reportedly been using the area as his living quarters.
"The other five victims, which would be the one adult female and the four juveniles, were in a second floor bedroom all together," said Henderson.
Investigators are still searching through the rubble to determine began the children PA house fire in the first place, according to NBC News. However, the process could take days and the mystery might take a long time to solve. They are analyzing how it all developed, but so far what is known is that Ronald was in the first floor while Jordan and her children died upstairs.
Other investigators are also asking family members about the house's layout of the house and the living habits of the victims. They reportedly want to get a clearer idea of where the family members were when the children PA house fire broke out and why they weren't able to escape, according to Henderson.
Meanwhile, it remains unknown whether investigators were able to interview Keith Egenlauf after the incident.
Autopsies of the children PA house fire victims will not be held until Sunday, according to the Allegheny County medical examiner's office.
