Located in the state of Colorado, the Midwest U.S, Aspen is one of the most popular winter destinations in the world. The city offers a wide range of activities including ballooning, biking, camping, hiking and fine dining.
The city has approximately 6,000 residents and accommodates up to $27,000 during peak holiday times between December and March. During this period, temporary workers of various nationalities and property owners on site mingle with some 250,000 tourists and sportsmen who flock to resorts, condominiums and hotels. Many visitors come to ski and snowboard in the region's four main mountains - Snowmass, Buttermilk, Aspen Mountain and Highlands - but there are also those who visit the city to try out new dishes from the local restaurants, buy designer items or enjoy a romantic weekend.
Currently, Australia, Brazil and the UK lead the ranking of foreign visitors in Aspen. Tourists contribute an average of $346 per day. A day in a resort or hotel can cost up to $3000, there are also good accommodation alternatives for approximately $120 a day. Backpackers are not common in the city, but groups of young athletes tend to cram into small condominiums nearby the mountains. The city has an efficient public transport system at no cost when travelling up to 30km.
The city attracts people from all age groups, ranging from children and young couples on honeymoon, to executives and the retired.
The winter schedule is packed with many activities, free rock concerts, opera shows and concerts.
For children who do not want to ski, they can opt for skating and sleigh rides. The hot springs (pools with thermal water) around the city attract families and couples.
In summer, camping, ballooning, paragliding, cycling and mountain trails are other options that attract 250,000 visitors, according to city reports.
