The Jeep towing the tractor-trailer had failed to stop, which led to the vehicle going off road before slamming into a tree.
The hayride accident Maine happened Saturday night. CNN was first to report that more than 20 people were injured in the accident. The incident had occurred during the haunted Halloween ride, "The Gauntlet." The ride is one feature in Pumpkin Land of Mechanic Falls located north of Portland. Investigations on the accident involving the 1979 Jeep CJ5 and the hayride wagon point out to a mechanical failure leading to the crash.
"It looks like there was a mechanical issue with the vehicle that caused [the Jeep] to not stop," stated Sergeant Joel Davis of the Maine Fire Marshal's office.
Apart from 20 people who had been injured in the hayride accident Maine, one fatality was recorded. A 17-year old teenage girl from Oakland's Messalonskee High School died in the ride. The victim has been idenitified as Cassidy Charette. Following the death of Cassidy and the injury of 22 other victims, the ride has been suspended along with the rest of the Halloween-themed activities.
"We can't even imagine the grief that the families are feeling right now. We are all impacted by this," stated Peter Bolduc, the head of the family who owns Harvest Hill Farms.
