USS America LHA-6 becomes the fourth U.S. warship to bear the country's name after being officially named as the newest member of the Navy on Saturday morning in San Francisco.
The U.S. Navy has officially welcomed its newest collection of warship just days before its 239th anniversary. It is the first ship of its class to replace the Tawara class. With the help of sophisticated technology, the newest naval vessel is equipped with a 21st century features which makes it more modern compared to other warships.
According to several reports, USS America LHA-6 is a hybrid and can run slower speeds while running also running under electric power. The 844-foot-long ship can carry thousands of Marines. Another of its known feature is its on-board hospital which is very necessary for providing the treatments that the members of the crew needs.
During the ceremony on Saturday, Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus reportedly delivered the principal address. Serving as the ship's sponsor is the wife of former former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Peter Pace, Lynne Pace, who also gave the traditional order.
The latest Navy ship which was actually five years in the making is said to be the symbol of the United States' maritime strength. With the authority of Captain Robert A. Hall Jr., who will serve as the USS America's commanding officer, he will be leading a crew composed of 1,200 sailors and almost 1,900 marines. Aside from that, the new warship is also expected to support current and other future aircrafts such as the tilt-rotor MV-22 Osprey and F-35B Lightning II.
Before being officially introduced, the said warship was built in Mississippi for five long years wherein 3,000 people worked for it. USS America LHA-6 left Mississippi on July for its maiden voyage to San Diego, but due to its enormous size, it circumnavigated South America and arrived in San Diego in Sept. 15 wherein she will be based after the Fleet Week.
