Kmart's data breach compromises a number of customer's credit and debit cards since September.
The cyberattack involving the said store is the latest addition in the list of retailers that have been hacked. Other stores affected with the same problem include Target, Supervalu and Home Depot. According to the report, the latest software problem has been discovered on October 9, but the company's IT team believes that it's already going on for over a month.
Security experts believe that Kmart's data breach involves the company's payment data systems. They say that the said system has been hit by a malware that even anti-virus systems can't detect. With that matter, the company is now working with the law enforcement and other banking partners in investigating the said problem.
Although the company has already removed the malicious software that jeopardized several credit and debit cards of its customers, it remains silent about the total number of cards affected by the theft. Moreover, they believe that no personal information, PIN numbers or social security number were taken by hackers. Forensic reports also state that the data breach in Kmart shoppers just obtained the account numbers and its expiration dates.
The data breach in the said company comes amidst the Kmart's current status. According to a report, the company actually tries to remain accessible to its customers despite of its struggle with its losses. With the said theft, no arrests have been made yet as the investigation still continues.
Secret Service has reportedly stated that already 1,000 American retailers are affected by the said technique while some of them do not know that they are already being attacked.
