Afghanistan gang rape executions have now left five Afghan men, who have been convicted, executed. These men have been convicted of gang-raping four women and their case outraged the nation.
Local officials have said that the men were hanged at the Pul-e-Charkhi prison, which was located to the east of Kabul. Another man was also hanged, but this sixth convict was executed for crimes that were unrelated to the Afghanistan gang rape executions.
The authorities opted to ignore their last-minute appeals for clemency from rights groups, who have repeatedly stated that the convictions were unsafe. Violence that was done to women, in Afghanistan, is rife. However, correspondents say that such cases hardly attract this much attention.
Many Afghan citizens have demanded for the completely implementation of the death penalty. Correspondents have stated that, given public opinion, there was very little chance that the sentences will not be carried out.
Atta Mohammad Noori, the attorney general's chief-of-staff, told AFP news agency, "The court's verdict has been implemented and all the convicts have been executed - five from the Paghman case, plus Habibi Istalifi, who was head of a notorious kidnapping gang."
It was actually Afghanistan's former President, Hamid Karzai, who signed the death warrants. Moreover, he apparently did so on his last day of duty as the nation's leader. The new President, Ashraf Ghani, who only took over last month, has not commented on this issue yet.
The gang rape incidents, that led to the infamous Afghanistan gang rape executions, actually occurred on August 23rd. They happened at a popular picnic spot in Paghman district near Kabul. The women were returning to Kabul with their families that night as they all came from a wedding celebration.
The attackers, who were armed, while some even donned police uniforms, tied up the men and dragged the women from their vehicles before raping them.
