Texas doctor sentenced just last week after it was proven that she poisoned her lover. Texas doctor sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Dr. Ana Gonzalez-Angulo was found guilty of aggravated assault last Friday. She was charged after the prosecutors stated that she spiked fellow doctor Dr. George Blumenschein's coffee with ethylene glycol last year. It turned out that Blumenschein was actually Gonzalez-Angulo's lover.
Ethylene glycol is actually a sweet-tasting chemical that found in anti-freeze materials. Since it tastes sweet, it was easily masked as a sweetening agent for the victim's coffee.
Blumenschein was able to survive the horrible ordeal. He said during the beginning of the trial's sentencing phase last Friday, "I am very grateful. Justice has been served."
The 43-year-old Texas doctor sentenced to 10 years in prison and the 50-year-old Blumenschein both worked as oncologists at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, which is located in Houston.
It was Blumenschein's girlfriend, Evette Toney, who testified in court last week that he suspected Gonzalez-Angulo to be the one responsible for poisoning him. However, according to the girlfriend, the male oncologist was afraid to contact the authorities.
Toney told recalled to the entire courtroom about how she discovered that her boyfriend was having an affair with his colleague at the prestigious cancer center. Regardless of their rocky relationship, Blumenschein realized that he loved Toney and decided to choose his girlfriend over his mistress.
This decision of his pushed the Texas doctor sentenced to prison to poison his coffee. Although he was able to live through the horrible incident, the poisoning gave Blumenschein permanent kidney damage, according to the testimonies that were given by the physicians who treated him at the hospital. Gonzalez-Angulo pleaded not guilty and could have been sentenced to prison for the remaining years of her life.
