The Detroit Pistons are expected to renew their pursuit for All-Star playmaker Rajon Rondo, whom analysts believed becomes more tradable than ever after suffering a hand injury.
In an interview with CineSports' Noah Coslov, Basketball Insiders veteran insider Alex Kennedy thinks Rondo will be dealt by trade deadline if the Celtics cannot bring a veteran star player to play alongside him in Beantown.
"If they aren't able to give Rondo some veteran help, I think we see the playmaker get traded before the trade deadline" Kennedy stated. "I think there's a risk of losing him for nothing after this season. He's gonna be an unrestricted free-agent and you never want to lose a guy for nothing."
The analysts added that Rondo's commitment to stick with the Celtics' long rebuilding plan might be in question, because the playmaker realizes he might not have a chance to win a championship within the next 2-3 years.
"With young talents and assets, the Celtics are set for the future. Kennedy said. "In the meantime, I can see Rondo getting impatient and wanting to leave."
On Friday, the Celtics announced that Rondo will miss six to eight weeks after accidentally breaking his hand at home. This development could be a trigger to a potential deal for the 28-year old Rondo, who averaged at least 11 points and 9 dimes coming off an ACL injury last season.
What are potential trade destinations for Rondo?
Kennedy believed there are three possible destinations for an All-Star caliber player like Rondo. He mentioned the Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings and the Detroit Pistons.
From the three, he thinks the Pistons make most sense because the team has the assets to make the trade work with their young talents and draft picks. Moreover, Rondo has been looking for a way to play with his former Oak Hill teammate Josh Smith.
Brandon Jennings or Greg Monroe, who will become an unrestricted free-agent next season, could be possible trade baits in this deal.
