McDonald's free coffee promo has officially started on Tuesday, Sept. 16 and so far many are pleased with the free coffee the fast food chain is serving during breakfast hours. But can this significantly increase the U.S. sales of the world's largest chain of hamburger restaurants and help it recover from its plummeting revenue?
According to TIME, the McDonald's free coffee promo is going to last for two weeks, with the ending date reported to be on the 29th of September.
The promo basically gives customers the chance to enjoy one free small McCafe coffee during the breakfast hours, or specifically from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
McDonald's free coffee promo comes at a time when there is a tight battle for breakfast customers amongst fast food chains. It also serves as an effort to boost the famous fast food restaurant's flagging U.S. sales.
The tight competition is best observed during the breakfast hours since other quick-service chains and coffee shops have broadened their breakfast offerings.
While Taco Bell has expanded its breakfast options, Burger King announced just last month that it is purchasing coffee-and-doughnut chain Tim Hortons to penetrate the breakfast market. Dunkin' Donuts is also seen as a strong competition, noted Los Angeles Times.
McDonald's revealed recently that the sales of its U.S. stores have dropped by 1.5% in the second quarter, with the net income very comparable to the figures it got last year.
McDonald's free coffee is seen to give the fast food chain a boost since its McCafe line has gained popularity since its official launching in 2009. At that time, McCafe only offered coffee, but as time passed by, the Oak Brook, Illinois company has ventured into selling lattes, frappes and smoothies, among others.
This is not the first time McDonald's is giving away free Mccafe coffee in the U.S. Roughly six months ago, the large fast food chain carried out the same promo to get more customers to try its coffee and breakfast options.
"This event builds on McDonald's first-ever Free Coffee Event launched in March, when the company gave away millions of cups of free coffee during the two-week period," a statement from the company read.
Market experts say that this promo is intended to 1. get customers into buying breakfast meals when they pick up one McCafe coffee for breakfast, and 2. to ensure that customers will come back for McDonald's breakfast options and coffee.
