According to Eyewitness News, the incident happened in a national forest in Kentucky. On Wednesday, officials said that even though the man sleepwalks off cliff, not only did he survive but he suffered only minor injuries.
27-year-old Ryan Campbell was camping with a group of friends in the northern part of the Daniel Boone National Forest in central Kentucky's Red River Gorge early last Thursday when the man sleepwalks off cliff, said rescue crews.
The Associated Press reports that Powell County Emergency Management told WKYT-TV the group set up near Grey's Arch Trail.
Campbell's pals for rescue when they realized he went missing in the middle of the night. After searching for Campbell, they found him at the foot of the cliff, and in between boulders and rocks.
According to the Mirror, his friends called for rescue at 1:15 a.m.
As the man sleepwalks off cliff, it reportedly took four hours for emergency crews to finish rescuing.
According to Wolfe County rope technician John May, the Cincinnati man fell about 60 feet early Thursday. May said the man sleepwalks off cliff and even landed in an area with a few large boulders. May said the man having survived is a "miracle".
"It's really a miracle. He fell 60 feet into boulders and from what we've been told he should make a full recovery. It's quite remarkable," said May.
May added that after the man sleepwalks off cliff, the camper suffered a head injury, a dislocated shoulder and a fractured leg. However, he is expected to make a full recovery, according to the AP.
May, who was with the Wolfe County search-and-rescue unit and one of the first responders said, "He had facial trauma and a head laceration, but his mood was very good. He was responding to our instructions."
May also told FOX 56 that the man sleepwalks off cliff as he had a history of sleepwalking.
"The campers who were with him found him at the bottom of a 60 foot cliff. The individual has a history of sleepwalking. So camping on a cliff ledge, that's probably what led to this incident," said May.
According to Eyewitness News, after the man sleepwalks off cliff, he fell on a bush, which broke his fall and saved his life.
The Wolfe County's volunteer squad is reportedly known for their experience in rescuing hikers and climbers from the steep forest. The area where the incident happened is a usual destination for tourists yearly.
Man sleepwalks off cliff and apparently, there are cases where a person fell even higher - 160 feet - and survived. There was also a case when a person fell 30 feet and died. He said, "It really just depends on how you hit and what you hit."
