Massive Home Depot Hack: American Retail Company Latest Victim of Credit Card Breach; Russian Hackers Suspected [WATCH VIDEO]

Massive Home Depot hack - The Atlanta-headquartered retail company is possibly the latest victim of a U.S. Security breach involving customers' credit and debit cards.

Cybersecurity website Krebs on Security, reported Sept. 2, that a large new batch of stolen credit and debit cards went on sale in the cybercrime black market Tuesday morning in the case dubbed as the Massive Home Depot Hack.

The retail chain reportedly confirmed to The Huffington Post the same day, that it is working with law enforcement and its bank partners to investigate "some unusual activity" following reports of evidence that could prove hackers stole customer data from Home Depot.

"Protecting our customers' information is something we take extremely seriously, and we are aggressively gathering facts at this point while working to protect customers," company spokesperson Paula Drake, said regarding the massive Home Depot hack. "If we confirm that a breach has a occurred, we will make sure customers are notified immediately. Right now, for security reasons, it would be inappropriate for us to speculate further - but we will provide further information as soon as possible."

It is unclear how many stores were affected by the massive Home Depot hack but initial investigation indicates 2,200 U.S. branches may have been affected, Brian Krebs of Krebs on Security said. Several banks contacted also believe that the breach possibly began in late April or early May, which means that the infringement could be many times larger than the one involving Target , that had 40 million credit and debit cards stolen in a three-week time, CBS Philly has learned.

Krebs said there are indications that the perpetrators of the supposed massive Home Depot hack are probably the same group of Russian hackers responsible for the data security breaches at Target, Sally Beauty and P.F. Chang's among many others. Banks contacted reportedly purchased their customer's cards from rescator[dot]cc - the same underground market that moved two huge new batches of stolen cards on Sept. 2.
