Vacation is the time where you really get to focus on yourself and do what makes life worthwhile. During this time, everyone feels tempted to eat the best tasting, most high calorie thing on the menu. The vacation may be for only a few days, and you might as well pleasure yourself. Well, that's when the bad habit of unhealthy eating starts. Here are some tips for eating healthy on vacation.
.) Embrace the salad: When you go to dinner at a nice restaurant you feel tempted to go for your favorite splurge of something along the lines of steak and potatoes. Try sticking to the salad section; it's cheaper and this new place you've traveled to is bound to have a fun spin on the classic garden or Caesar salad.
.) Visit the local farmers market: Whether you're traveling out of the country or just an hour away from home, try to hit up the local farmers market to see the different local vegetables and fruit. This is a fun activity as well as healthy because you can pick some of the snacks and foods you want to cook while you're there visiting.
.) Trade the coffee for a smoothie: The classic, over caffeinated American loves to go on vacation because it gives them the excuse to get a Starbucks coffee every morning. Instead of the getting the high calorie venti mocha or frappuccino, opt for hitting up a local smoothie bar. A smoothie will keep you full longer and provides you with almost all your fruit and or vegetable servings.
.) Choose the salad plate: This doesn't necessarily mean only eat salad at the buffet, but this does mean that choosing the smaller plate will force you to eat less. Buffets are a great way for everyone to get what they want, but maybe too much of what they want... this way you can limit yourself to a smaller portion.
.) Choose water: Water is arguably the best thing you can put in your body. Choosing water instead of a soda or a high calorie cocktail is ideal for keeping your calorie count down. This doesn't mean you shouldn't have your glass of wine or special beverage for vacation, but limit your drinks to one at a time between glasses of water to make sure you don't over indulge on too many drinks.
