Real Madrid's superstar duo of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale were targeted by David Moyes during his tumultuous one-year tenure at Old Trafford, the former Red Devils boss said in an interview with Matt Lawton of the Daily Mail on Saturday.
In his first interview after he was booted out of Old Trafford, Moyes revealed that he was 'close' to adding a number of big names during his 10-month tenure. Ronaldo, who formerly played with Manchester United, topped the list, while Gareth Bale and Cesc Fabregas were also mentioned in his wish list.
"It's been well documented that we wanted Fabregas, Bale and Ronaldo. There was talk of Ronaldo when I first arrived. Moyes told the Daily Mail. "We were close to getting a couple of major names. I'm not getting in a blame game here, but things just didn't materialise."
Moyes, who had terrific stin as the manager for Everton for 11 years, believed replacing Sir Alex Ferguson has always been impossible given the achievement his predecessor brought to Old Trafford over the years.
'It was a step into the unknown and, looking back now, it was near enough the impossible job," Moyes said of replacing Ferguson as the top man at Old Trafford.
Despite his firing, Moyes stressed that he deserved the job at Old Trafford than any English managers, mainly because of his experience and accomplishments at Everton. Unfortunately, he was not given enough time to apply his philosophy.
Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal named Wayne Rooney as the team's new team captain - a move Moyes would also do if he remains at Old Trafford.
With regards to the Red Devils pursuit of a world-class player, the names of Real Midfielder Angel di Maria is being hurled as a potential target before the transfer window shuts down. Di Maria has been the Galacticos' premier playmaker for the past seasons, but he has become available for transfer following the arrival of Colombia's James Rodriguez and Germany's Toni Kross.
As for Ronaldo's availibility, there's a possibility the two-time Ballon d'Or winner could re-join the Red Devils in the near future, especially if the Old Trafford side continues to gain momentum under Van Gaal.
