Driver killed short track - A 21-year-old woman passed away Saturday, after the car she was driving crashed on a wall at a New Jersey track.
In the case termed as the driver killed short track, Amanda Gambacorto from Middletwon, N.J., was killed after the three-quarter midget vehicle she was maneuvering slammed head-on into a wall at Wall Stadium Speedway in Wall, N.J., in the early afternoon of Aug. 16, Fox News has learned.
Gambacorto was immediately rushed to the Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where she was pronounced dead shortly after at around 1:26 p.m. ET, the Asbury Park (N.J.) Press reported.
According to State Police Capt. Steve Jones, the victim in the driver killed short track case was tailing another racer prior the accident. He said cops received a call about a one-car accident at about 12:30 p.m. ET.
A double major in environmental humanities and philosophy, Gambacorto was not racing during the accident, but instead was participating in a clinic held by Green Flag Driving Experience, The Stony Brook Statesman reported.
Multiple reports said that the woman who was involved in the driver killed short track case was driving in a "novice three-quarter midget racing program" although Jones has not determined whether Gambacorto was a neophyte or not.
In the Green Flag's website, the three-quarter midgets are described as "small scale race cars with a very high power-to-weight ration which use four-cylinder engines." The cars could reportedly reach speeds more than 90 mph on the 1/3-mile, 30-degree high-banked asphalt oval. Gambacorto's speed during the time of the accident was not reported.
The driver killed short track accident came a week after Kevin Ward Jr., 20, died after he was hit by a car driven by NASCAR star Tony Stewart, in an Empire Sprint Series race at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports Park.
