Reigning UEFA Champions League champion Real Madrid will not let the transfer period end without making another big move. According to German newspaper Bild, the Spanish giants is reportedly looking to acquire Bayern Munich goaltender Manuel Neuer.
Real Madrid will reportedly make their second raid on Bayern Munich after they acquired midfielder Toni Kross from the German club. Now, they are looking to fortify their defense by getting the best goaltender in the world in Neuer, who recently helped Germany win the World Cup in Brazil.
"Real Madrid have reportedly set their sights on a second high-profile raid on Bayern Munich, with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer eyed as their ideal replacement for Iker Casillas," according to Bild translated by Caught Offside.
Meanwhile, Casillas is expected to make his move to Arsenal on free transfer next season. In fact, his spot as Real Madrid's no.1 goaltender is under threat after the club acquired Levante's Keylor Navas.
At age 33, Casillas' performance has been shaky as of late, not to mention his nightmarish stint with Spain at the 2014 World Cup. The former top goaltender is already entering the final year of his contract with Real Madrid, and Arsenal is believed to be the most interested to have Casillas guarding between the bars.
For Real Madrid, Casillas' impending exit marks the change of the guards for the Galactico defense after over a decade at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. Neuer, who is known for his unconventional style of goaltending, is expected to command a big transfer fee along with a monster salary if he becomes available.
"The World Cup winner has been one of the top players in the world in his position in recent times, helping Bayern Munich to tremendous success in the last couple of years before also shining for his country in Brazil this summer."
However, many pundits believed Real Madrid is ready to shell out more cash in order for them to get their target player. Historically, the club has been successful in acquiring world-class footballers such as David Beckham, Zinadine Zidane, Ronaldo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and recently James Rodriguez.
"He would no doubt be expensive, but Real have a good track record of landing their top transfer targets, having also raided the Bavarians for key playmaker Toni Kroos earlier in this transfer window."
