English Premier League giant Manchester United are reportedly preparing a £100m package to acquire Real Madrid midfielder Angel di Maria, a source close to situation reported on Sunday.
"Manchester United are prepared to commit as much as £100million to their pursuit of Angel Di Maria as the ailing Barclays Premier League club try to beef up Louis van Gaal's squad before the end of the summer transfer window," the Daily Mail reported.
According to sources, the Red Devils' embarassing home loss to Swansea City on opening day has further convinced manager Louis Van Gaal to get a world-class player before the transfer window expires.
Van Gaal has been pushing the club to adapt his 3-5-2 system by luring high-caliber midfielders and elite defenders to join the club. Obviously, Di Maria is considered as a premier playmaker with the ability to orchestrate plays in a consistent basis.
Di Maria, whose tenure with Real Madrid became blurry following the arrival of James Rodriguez and Toni Kross, could get a salary along with performance-based incentives worth £200,000 per week. That amount of money over a five-year span in addition to the winger's transfer fee worth £50 million could get the Red Devils' investment on the Argentine up to £100 million.
"It is understood United have told the Argentine that, with performance-based incentives, they will pay him around £200,000 a week. Over a five-year deal that would take the club's investment to £100m when a transfer fee of around £50m is included," via the Daily Mail.
With Manchester United not playing at Europe's most prestigious club tournament the UEFA Champions League, Van Gaal and chief executive Ed Woodward are aware that they have to place a high price on the table for their targets.
Aside from Di Maria, the Red Devils are also targeting Marcos Rojo of Sporting Lisbon and Daley Blind of Ajax to fill up their need for a central defender and holding midfielder. The name of Milan and Holland mainstay Jason de Jong has also been linked to the EPL powerhouse, although it seems the hard-tackling veteran will stay put with his current ball club.
Over the course of summer, Manchester United only signed Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw while most members of their first team - including Robin Van Persie - are still sidelined with injuries.
