Liverpool has been hot after Colombian striker Radamel Falcao as its next star striker following the departure of Uruguayan goal-scoring machine Luis Suarez to Barcelona this summer, a source close to situation reported on Saturday.
Falcao, who was one of the most prolific goal scorers in European football last season, is reportedly drawing interest from several European giants- including English Premier League rivals Liverpool and reigning domestic champion Manchester City.
With Luis Suarez making a big jump to Barcelona, Liverpool has been looking for replacement and manager Brendan Rodgers believed the club has the money to make a run at Falcao, who reportedly preferred to join Real Madrid.
"It was always the case that we needed to improve the squad. We haven't brought in another striker other than Rickie Lambert. We aim to do that, and the money's there. It's not as if there'll be any panic buy," Rodgers told ESPN FC.
"We needed to improve the squad in various areas, and that's what we've done. That would have happened whether Luis was here or not.
"With Luis going, we wanted to improve that top end of the field. That's something we'll look to do right to the very end. If we don't, it means the right player hasn't become available for us.
The Reds are reportedly interested to pay Falcao £200,000 a week on loan from Monaco. However, the Reds aren't the only team interested to add Falcao to their lineup, as the Daily Mail reported Manchester City's inquiry on the Colombian's situation.
"It is understood that the financing of the move would not be a problem even though Falcao would need to be paid more than £200,000 a week. Monaco are asking for a £12million loan fee, though that would be negotiated down. Manchester City have also made inquiries about Falcao but not taken it further at present," the Daily Mail reported.
Aside from Falcao, the Reds are also monitoring on the situation of Urguayan and Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani. Then again, Liverpool's pursuit of the striker was derailed following an injury to Zlatan Ibahimovic during PSG's game against Bastia.
"Arsenal and Liverpool have been dealt a huge blow in the race to sign Edinson Cavani after Zlatan Ibahimovic picked up a muscle injury during PSG's match against Bastia today leaving the French champions short of world-class options up front," via ESPN FC.
