The idea of Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo getting traded soon has become more inevitable, according to veteran NBA analyst Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders.
In his latest article on Basketball Insiders, Kyler talked about the still loaded summer of 2015 and how free-agency would shape up a year from now. With LeBron James and Kevin Love expected to re-sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers next year, the analyst believed Rondo will be the top obtainable free-agent in the market that year.
The 28-year old Rondo posted strong numbers coming off an ACL injury, averaging 11 points, 9.8 assists and 5.5 rebounds in 33 minutes per game. These numbers proved that he can still play at a high level after a major surgery. According to Kyler, another good showing next season could give Rondo more leverage to command a max contract.
"Rondo is considered the top obtainable free agent in the 2015 free agent class and he is likely going to command a max level, or near max level contract," Kyler stated in his article.
However, the possibility of Rondo staying in Boston is becoming slimmer as days pass by. The Celtics already have a surplus of talented guards in their roster after drafting Marcus Smart, James Young and re-signing Avery Bradley.
Kyler called a Rondo trade inevitable for the Celtics, who appear pretty set to start a youth revolution with Smart, Young and Sullinger comprising the nucleus of the team.
"It seem inevitable that Rondo is going to be traded, the question is what's the return going to be for Boston, especially when it's more likely than not that Rondo explores his options in July,?" the Basketball Insider stated.
Where Rondo is Going?
There are multiple teams interested in acquiring the service of perhaps the best passer in the game today, but only few have the capability to offer an assets-laded package for general manager Danny Ainge.
The Sacramento Kings have been knocking on the door for a while now, but sources indicated the Celtics front office are not interested to accept the contracts of Derrick Williams, Jason Thompson and handful of bad contracts for their most valuable player on their roster. Moreover, Rondo doesn't want to play for a bad team.
Still, the best landing spot for Rondo out there will be the Houston Rockets, who can still send a solid package consists of young talents and draft picks despite the departure of Omer Asik, Jeremy Lin and Chandler Parsons.
