The Charlotte Hornets would be an ideal landing spot for All-Star guard Stephen Curry when he becomes a free-agent three years from now.
Curry, who is expected to be one of the main players in Team USA's campaign at the World Cup of Basketball in Spain later this month, talked about free-agency and his dream of playing for his hometown team, the Charlotte Hornets, during an interview on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
Via Inside Bay Area:
"The subject was raised to Curry on The Doug Gottlieb Show last week when asked if watching what James did would lead him to consider playing for his hometown Charlotte Hornets."
"I've always had thoughts about playing at home, what it would be like," said Curry, who is in the middle of a four-year, $44 million contract extension with the Warriors. "My dad played there for 10 years, and people around the Greater Charlotte area in North Carolina have done a lot for my family growing up, so you always think about it."
Curry grew up in Carolina neighborhood as his father, former NBA player Dell Curry, played 10 seasons with the Hornets. He also played his high-school basketball at Charlotte Christian School and had terrific three seasons at Davidson. So, Charlotte is pretty much home for him.
However, Curry stressed that free-agency isn't going to bother him this early. After all, he's just entering the second year of his four-year, $44 million extension. The All-Star sniper added that he's focused right now on leading the Golden State Warriors back to title contention following two exciting trips in the playoffs.
"Right now I feel like I've got three years left on my deal, so this isn't going to be an issue for me for a while. I love the Bay Area and where we are as a team trying to win a championship, and that's what it's all about. Of course everybody dreams about or thinks about what it's going to be like to play at home. Obviously if that opportunity comes along it's a different discussion."
Thinking the Hornets as a free-agency destination for Curry would be a little premature. There will be lots of factors to consider when a player hits the market, especially if he's an elite player. However, there's no doubt that coming home and play for the team you grew up supporting would certainly be intriguing thought. For the Warriors organization and he fans, you have three more seasons left to make Curry feel at home in Bay Area, or else he might end up in the Hornets hive.
