Jon Jones Injured - Daniel Cormier will have to wait a few extra months before he can get his hands on his opponent again. The two fighters were set to battle in the cage for Jones' light heavyweight UFC title on Sept. 27, however, an injury to the champ during training camp has forced him to withdraw from the match.
News about Jon Jones injured was first reported by Fox Sports 1, while MMA Fighting provided more details of the said injury. According to the report, the reigning light heavyweight king has suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee and a spained ankle during a wrestling practice on Monday. It was not disclosed whether he will be needing surgery.
The two made headlines earlier when a brawl exploded between them in a routine faceoff during a two-city press tour for their bout in Las Vegas. Apparently, they weren't able to hold the tension among them and the incident is said to have heightened the fans' anticipation making their 205-pound title combat the most awaited fight of the year, Bleacher Report has learned.
But with Jon Jones injured now, the event lost momentum for the time being, as it has been pushed back at UFC 182 on Jan. 3.
"It's very disappointing," Daniel Cormier responded to the news of his opponent's injury while seemingly taking a verbal jab at him. "I started to train very hard. It's a little discouraging, but now I have time to get completely healthy. I don't know how hurt Jon is but we have to remember that I took this fight with a pre-existing injury. I could have fought through it, I just wish he would have done the same."
Cormier has reportedly opted out of corrective knee surgery just to replace Alexander Gustafsson after the Swede suffered injury on one of his knees and was forced to withdraw from the Sept. 27 title rematch opposite Jones.
And with Alexander Gustaffson and Jon Jones injured together, Daniel Cormier couldn't help but ask anxiously whether he would have to get inline again to face Jones.
Well, Cormier just received what could be the best news in his life as UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta assured him no one but him will have the opportunity of beating Jones when he get backs in the Octagon.
