Roger Federer's quest for another title continues on Sunday when he takes on a surging Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the men's single final of the Rogers Cup. Meanwhile, Venus Williams looks to cap her surprising run in Montreal with a victory against Poland Agnieszka Radwanska.
The 33-year old Federer has been superb through the entire tournament, beating younger opponents with precision and aggressive playing style. On Saturday, the Swiss Maestro booked his spot in the final after scoring a 6-3, 6-4 win over Spain's Feliciano Lopez.
"I think I served well, I was aggressive and I was able to really play the way I wanted to play tonight," Federer told the press following his victory. "I'm very happy."
Still, Federer is aware that he's going to face a harder match against Tsonga, who has been unstoppable even against top-10 opponents in the tourney.
The former Australian Open runner up stunned Novak Djokovic in the third round, defeated Andy Murray in the quarterfinals and vanquished Grigor Dimitrov to set a date with Federer in the championship match.
"I just think he can overpower guys," Federer said about his finals opponent. "Serve up a storm and then play really aggressive with his forehand and also be solid on his backhand. You think you're in a safe place sometimes in the rally and he takes one step and just hits it and the point is over."
Tsonga, on the other hand, is ecstatic for the opportunity to play and beat a fan-favorite like Federer on the big stage.
"When you play against Roger, it's always special," Tsonga said. "First, because you play in a big area, in a big stadium anyway. And every time the crowd is for him, so it's quite a good sensation. It's quite a good feeling when you win against 10,000 people."
Venus Williams vs. Ageniezka Radwanka
Venus recaptured her old mojo to beat her sister and world's no.1 Serena Williams in three sets 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-3 to reach her first WTA final of the year. Still, the elder Williams stressed that he won't put pressure on her too much as she takes on another tough cookie in Radwanska, who defeated Ekaterina Makarova 7-6 (1), 7-6 (3).
"I definitely don't want to have a letdown and get out there and not play at least half as well," Venus said about the final. "I don't want to put any pressure on myself, but I want to go out there and perform just as well. It would mean a lot to me because I've been dreaming of winning a tournament at this level since I got back on tour. You try and you try. There are disappointments. One day you get a little closer. So this is my 'little closer' right now."
