Former world's no.1 Rafael Nadal could miss the US Open championship as his recovery from a right wrist injury might take more weeks, according to his personal doctor.
"Rafael Nadal's doctor asserted that the Spaniard's wrist injury is serious and they will evaluate it to see whether the Spaniard would be fit for the US Open or not. According to Dr. Angel Ruiz-Cotorro, who has been nursing Rafael Nadal's injury, they are not sure whether Nadal would participate in the US Open or not as it directly depends upon his recovery," according to Tennis Earth.
Nadal, who already withdrew from the Rogers Cup and Cincinnati Masters after hurting his right wrist during practice, could see his US Open defence in big jeopardy because of the injury.
Cottoro said the wrist injury sustained by Nadal is a serious one but common among tennis players. However, it may take longer more than the 2-3 weeks recovery time, though it always depends on the condition of the wrist.
"It is a common injury in tennis, but it must be well treated to avoid problems." Cottoro said in an interview via Tennis World USA. "The recovery period is between two and three weeks, we'll see how gets and from the evolution if he can participate or not." (in reference to the US Open).
Whether he can participate or not at the US Open championship, the injury proved to be a big blow for Nadal, who looks to retain the world's no.1 ranking before the year end.
The 28-year old Nadal lost the top spot in the ATP rankings following his subpar performance at the Wimbledon Open, and the task to get back the title becomes more daunting as he has to defend 4,000 points in the North American hard-court season.
With his withdrawal from the Rogers Cup and Cincinnati Masters, Nadal already lost 2,000 ATP points and can lose another 2,000 points if he pulls out of the US Open battle in Flushing Meadows starting late August.
Canadian rising star Milos Raonic said Nadal's injury is surprising but it's also a welcome development for other competitors who are hungry to bag titles in Toronto, Cincinnati and Flushing Meadows.
"There's a lot of people hungry in this sport," Raonic said at the Citi Open via Tennis Earth. "It's unfortunate to see him go but ... there are too many that are hungry and are licking their chops."
Nadal's retirement allowed Roger Federer to be the next favourite player to win the US Open behind world's no.1 Novak Djokovic, who aims for his second title in the tournament.
