The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly targeting Rajon Rondo when he becomes an unrestricted free-agent next summer, a source close to situation reported on Friday.
According to Hoops Rumors writer Chuck Myron, the Lakers are expected to make a run at the biggest free-agent next summer - Rondo.
"The Lakers could still be in play for point guard Rajon Rondo, but not until the 2015 season. The Boston Celtics point guard will be a free agent come next season and the Lakers may try and swing a deal for him," Myron stated in his article via Sports World Report.
Available options for the Lakers are a possible trade for Minnesota Timberwolves guard Ricky Rubio and Brooklyn Nets playmaker Deron Williams, who is reportedly frustrated with his situations with his current team.
"Myron believes the Lakers will slowly start to shift their focus to 2015 and leave their current roster as is. The Lakers have also been linked to both Ricky Rubio and Deron Williams via trades, but again those would not be able to happen until at least next season when the team has a little more cap space cleared," the analyst added.
The Lakers recently added Jeremy Lin in a trade with the Houston Rockets to serve as their main playmaker next season. With Steve Nash pessimistic about his health going next year, Lin will have a lot of opportunity to run the first team along with Kobe Bryant, Carlos Boozer and Ed Davis.
"I think this is my last season," Nash told the press. "But I still love to play, practice and work on my game. I'm going to spend hopefully many many years living this life without basketball. It'll be nice to play one more year."
Lin, who averaged 12 points and 4 dimes last season with the Rockets, should consider this upcoming season as an audition for a longer tenure with the Lakers. However, if he doesn't live up to expectation, the Lakers are sure to pull off deal to upgrade this position.
Despite coming off an ACL injury, Rondo compiled a solid performance statistically with 11.7 points, 9.8 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game. His contract expires after next season and many teams are expected to recruit the two-time assist champion - one of which are the Lakers.
On the other hand, Rubio and Williams are also solid options for the purple-and-gold. Rubio is one of the best passers in the game, but there are concerns about his ability to take the game as a scorer. Meanwhile, Williams has been struggling these past two season since signing a lucrative contract with the Nets. A change of scenery could do wonders for the veteran All-Star point guard.
