Superstar Kevin Durant isn't turning down reports that he might bolt out from the Oklahoma City Thunder to return home in DC and play for the Washington Wizards in 2016.
Durant, who was born in Washington DC, admitted in an interview with the Washington Post that he's aware of the rumours circulating about a possible homecoming in DC when he becomes a free-agent in the summer of 2016.
"We're going to put it out on the table. It's been talked about," Durant said. "Everybody is asking me about it. Every time I go on Instagram or Twitter, all my friends ask me about it. So I'm not going to sit here and act like I'm naïve to the fact that people think about that stuff.
The 25-year old Durant said he liked his present situation with the Thunder, though he never shut the door on the possibility of hooking up with John Wall, Bradley Beal and Marcin Gortat to form a championship contender in DC two seasons from now.
"But I just tell everybody, 'Look, I'm here in Oklahoma City. I love it here.' Who knows what'll happen? You never can close a door on anything, but I like where I'm at right now. I can't answer those questions," Durant said.
The rumours of Durant joining the Wizards in the future started gaining some traction when former Maryland coach Gary Williams talked about the impact of LeBron James' homecoming to Cleveland on Durant's future free-agency decision.
"One interesting thing on this LeBron going back to Cleveland, Durant's watching that very close," Williams told the Washington Post. "He's seeing the adulation pouring out for LeBron James for coming home. And Durant loves this area [Washington DC-Maryland].
Long-time NBA writer Chris Sheridan also claimed in his recent article that a Durant to Wizards scenario is not a stretch because the Wizards is an emerging title contender in the Eastern Conference while the Thunder is having trouble getting over the hump since trading away James Harden to the Houston Rockets two seasons ago.
Aside from the Wizards, big market teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and the New York Knicks are also expected to make a run at one of the best basketball players in the world once his contract expires in 2016.
