Boxing competitions at the 2014 Commonwealth Games are heating up, with the quarterfinal and semi-final round already underway at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow, Scotland.
Paddy Barnes, Commonwealth Games defending champion and 2012 London Olympics, will try to stamp his superiority in the final eight, where he's expected to face even greater challenges.
Barnes, who gained notoriety in amateur boxing as the guy who almost defeated two-time Beijing Olympics Gold medallist Zou Shiming in London two years ago, booked his spot into the final after knocking out Hamadi Furahisha of Tanzania in their round-of-16 clash.
With the victory, Barnes became the sixth boxer from perennial boxing powerhouse Northern Island to reach the quarterfinal round of this year's Commonwealth Games.
"That's the second one out of the way against world no.3 ranked boxer, happy with the win even tho it was scrappy,!" the 27-year old Barnes posted on his Twitter account following his sensational victory.
Meanwhile, Samuel Maxwell already punched his way to the semifinal round with a 3-0 victory over Commonwealth Games defending champion Manoj Kumar of India in their Light Welterweight quarterfinal battle.
With the upset victory, Maxwell opened the floodgates of opportunity for other boxers to medal in the weight category. Up next for the Englishman is Josh Taylor of Scotland, who defeated Zack Davies of Wales 3-0.
In the Super Heavyweight division, England Joseph Joyce also advanced to the final four with a 3-0 win against Scotland's Ross Henderson, while Australian Jordan Samardali got knocked out in the first round by Kennedy St Pierre of Mauritius in their light-heavyweight match.
Meanwhile, Australian pugilist Daniel Lewis called for the return of headgear after suffering a nasty cut above the eye that costed him the win against India's Mandeep Jangra. Lewis vented out his frustration on Facebook, stressing things could have been better for him if he was wearing protective headgear.
"Well that's my journey over," he said. "Got up at 6am this morning to lose weight. I made it and was ready to go to war only to be told by the doctor my journey is over. They won't let me fight with the cut.
"I had two fights, two comfortable wins with one TKO and a stupid elbow ruins it all."
