The man, who is currently in critical condition, has been identified as 49-year-old Brendan McKelvey of Hunger Hill. The dog, a black Patterdale terrier, was out with McKelvey for his daily walk when McKelvey was viciously attacked.
After the attack in the early hours of Jul. 25, McKelvey fell on the pavement having been knocked unconscious. Since then, the dog stands guard over owner waiting for help to arrive.
According to the Mirror, McKelvey is now in a coma after what police describes as being punched in the face two or three times.

Chadwick also said, 'He was out walking his dog when he was attacked and we are urging people to come forward if they were in the area at that time and witnessed the attack or remember seeing the dog in the photo.'

According to police, there are no obvious signs of a weapon being used in the attack. McKelvey's injuries were mainly located at the back of his head. Detectives are saying the injuries are consistent with having been punched in the face two or three times.

Chadwick also spoke to The Bolton News and said, 'He was quite a distance from his home when the assault happened, and we don't know where he was going. There are no obvious signs of a weapon being used. His injuries are consistent with him being punched in the face two to three times, with the main injuries on the back of his head.'
McKelvey reportedly takes late night walks with his dog for therapy with his deep vein thrombosis.
